"Tank You" Vase

This is probably one of my favorite designs of all time, the "tank you" vase. First saw this at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Did not buy it when i had the chance, I literally just ordered it online before posting this.

Tank You is a love story between a tank and a flower. Designed by Thierry Galloni d'Istria, the Tank You vase spreads just a little cheer and optimism in these troubled times.

Never thought id be giving any form of Nazi influenced/inspired deisgn props but yo this is hot.

This bench was made for an italian fair and called "s(h)it on it". There is a cross (Christian) version in the same series.

On the subject of Nazi and design did you know that the all-black dress uniform of the Nazi Schutzstaffel or SS, in use from 1932 until 1942, was designed by SS-Oberführer Prof. Dr. Karl Diebitsch and graphic designer Walter Heck.^[3] From 1933, the Hugo Boss company was one of the firms that produced these black uniforms along with the brown SA shirts and the black-and-brown uniforms of the Hitler Youth.^[4]^[5]

Im a graphic designer buy training but the initial plan was architecture - got some doggy career advice somewhere along the way, hence my current profesion. I still love dope buildings though and these are some I captured on holiday in Europe. (graphic design is not a bad consolation prize though - i love what i do and will design buildings one day)

It was nice seeing how some European cities embrace and recognise graffiti as street/urban art, it literally gave certain places more texture and depth in that the subject matter was mostly provocative commentary on the mindset of the cities inhabitants (fuck, i sound like, as Kemang would put it, A Creative Intellectual). But it was dope to see graffiti on the high street alongside brands like Hugo Boss. Check it out.

Look closer, the original price is €1998! Thats R18 660,835. For-A-Shoe! (exclamation mark, incase you did not see it), For-A-Shoe people! I love looking fresh, I dig Tom Ford but What - The - Fuck? This shop had a whole gang of dope shit but I just did not even bother stepping in - Its like they put this item on the window to ward off us poor people, and it worked. I wonder if I will ever get to the point in my life where I can justify such a purchase.....if i do, I'll let you know.

North Sea Jazz Fest - Rotterdam Netherlands

Undoubtably the highlight of the trip, Netherlands was a perfect way to end the vacation and this is why:
-Amsterdam red light district! (ask no questions, ill tell you no lies)
-World Cup Final in Rotterdam @ the NSJF (if only they won!)
-Killer NSJF line-up: Stevie Wonder, Nas & Damian Marley, Joss Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae, Herbie Hangcock, THE ROOTS, AL GREEN, Earth Wind & Fire, Norah Jones and a hela lot more.

If you've never been to the original NSJF #myadvice2you, do it one day, its truly a music lovers dream and as you can see with the line-up above, don't let the word "Jazz" mislead you, its all just good soulful music. The NSJF is were i really got to bon with my third wife, my camera with its fancy lenses that got confiscated for looking too professional (yes im blinging!) but got smuggled back in in pieces. Yo it's been a while since I last shared and Im actually itching especially after the month long trip to Europe which I came back from almost two months ago already - Saw a lot, experienced a lot and came back feeling really inspired but also more in love with this beautiful country called South Africa. The posts will be mixed, some will be from shit I found on the trip and others as normal will be shit I find everyday. So bear with me cause you will be hearing about the trip for a while. Streets of Berlin

Yo. So its been a minute seen my last post, 24 days to be exact. So needless to say i failed dismally on the blogathon challenge to post everyday in the month of May. I tried. So Im in Prague, sitting in the hotel bar, well, actually its a hostel bar but this place feels like a 4 star hotel just without room service (Czechinn - stay here if you ever decide to visit).

The post is titled "Streets of Berlin" because we were there for a week before taking the dopest 6 hour train through the beautiful German countryside to Prague and i have decided to blog about each destination post the experience. Its my way of journaling the experience, my album if you will.

I see the world primarily from a design viewpoint so as i travel through Europe design is what grabs me in all its forms be it graffiti, architecture, fassion and even things as simple as signage.

This is the first time Im in Europe and Im like Jim comes to Joburg, Im walking around like a tourist, eyes wide open, head in the sky, camera in my hand and Im loving it.

Berlin was dope. I could live here for a couple of years. The place is at the forefront of design in every way, the graffiti is hot and embraced by the the people, it gives the slick neighborhoods an edge and it is provocative. Fashion is easy living chic, people are dressed to the nines but you can see that comfort and personality comes first - everyone has a signature. Architecture, very interesting.

So the world cup is here and the fever is so contagious that it does not discriminate against race, gender or nationality. You could hate soccer and love rugby with all that you are but you can't be immune to whats happening and whats is about to take place in the streets of SA.

I am Honoured to be a South African, I'm honoured to be part of the nation that is carrying Africa on its shoulders and I am also honoured to be an African (shit, I'm starting to sound like Thabo...). The world cup presents an opportunity for Africans to truly unite, it also presents an opportunity for South Africa to deal with its Xenophobic tendencies and issues.

Hola 6 Pack is a campaign that i was invited to help drive by friends on mine Terry Behan, Bonolo Sekhukhune and the Fearless Executive Team. It is a campaign that asked a simple question, "how do we mobilise all Africans to unilaterally support the continents ownership and participation in this historic event?"

From here, Hola Six Pack was born. A campaign, a movement if you will to rally support for all six participating African teams under one banner.

Hola Six Pack is one voice, one presence and one symbol for the Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup. South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria, Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria together represent Africa.

How crazy is this?

I was in thailand about a month ago and when i returned this is what i wrote about the protests that were taking place while we were there,"Streets of Bangkok. The Red Shirts, as they're known in Thailand were out in full effect demanding that parliament be dissolved. People would ask if we were not afraid to walk the streets, our response, "we are from South Africa, and what you guys are doing here looks more like a family day to us, this is not a protest". No Jokes, what they describe as serious protest looks more like a festival."

The version is off Jamies latest album, "The Persuit", got it yesterday and it is the shit! I have all his albums his except one, they're all brilliant but i have been waiting for him to match his second album, "Twenty something" and in this one he has.

And the video! My God its hot - that high definition technology has been utilized well here and kept simple but super duper chick & on the edgy.

Blogathon

I stumbled on Blogathon (see top right banner) and thought it was a dope challenge (well...Lebo found it and shared it with me - thanks doll). Blogathon is a challenge to bloggers to blog every single day in the month of May. Thought i could do this with my eyes closed because sometimes i blog thrice in 1 day...so i signed up immediately.

What i did not consider is that every "single" day also means weekends and even those week days when you are busy running around like a headless chicken trying to meet client deadlines - Now i know why they call it The Bloagathon "Challenge". I wonder if this post will even count.

That being said, i wont quit. I now challenge myself to post at least 30 blogs in the month of May and i know it wont be easy because ish in the studio is hectic...

The best find to date!

One of the the best combinations of form, function, innovation, design and beauty i have ever seen. Huge big up to Black Coffee.

For me this is the best find to date because it is hot on so many levels. The ladies may think this is a "whateverrr" find but understand my point of view, 1 dress, 12 or so styles (no other accompanying piece of clothing!). This means i could buy my boo one outfit a year but dress her at least once every month - talk about a gift that keeps giving!

A lot of ya'll probably been knowing this for a minute but i just discovered that we have our very own Bansky, and her name is Faith47. I had seen a lot of her work prior but did not know it was her until Esther shared this find with the team in our "sharing is caring" portion of our weekly status meetings - thanks Estheeezy.

Bellow is a vid done for an exhibition Faith47 had in Berlin, it was titled “The restless debt of the third world beauty”

Faith wrote piece that went along with the exhibition which sums up the title nicely - read it.

“South Africa geographically is segregated in terms of class and race.
People live within their community without ever experiencing or interacting across their borders.
We remove ourselves from people and places that we do not experience at first hand.
They simply
do not exist.
This is not specific to South Africa but is reflected in the world at large.
We feel so far removed from each other but in reality we are so very close.

The restless debt of third world beauty
is my personal exploration into parts of the South African landscape that
juxtapose beauty and strength with hardship and neglect.

Both the female and the third world have been oppressed and raped.
Despite this they are powerfully resilient and form the backbone of strength in society.
Their voices silenced in the media with its strong western male gaze.

There is frustration and resistance that results from this situation.
And this restless debt is what I am looking at.
The resilience and strength.
The angry calm
silent shouts
something humble and bullet-proof in a violent world."

Julius Malema & Jesse Jackson

When it come to Julius, i wont lie, its a love/hate relationship for me. There, i said it.

I love him because in essence, this is the only guy that is making us talk about issues that many would rather we ignore. And the fact is, problems are never comfortable to talk about or deal with so why should we sugar coat them in fancy intellectual language, studies or theories?

Jesse Jackson is currently in the country to recieve an honourary literature doctorate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. I realised that in one very well articulated speach, he summed up what Julius Malema has been trying to say since he stepped into the scene via issues such as nationalisation, Zimbabwe and many other sensitive and sometime not so appropriate channels.

Do yourself a favor and read the speech here .

The hate is actually not really hate, but rather...i don't know...a sadness i guess, frustration at the fact that the only guy with balls to challenge the status quo lacks in formal education and is therefore unable to articulate his views in a manner that is "socially" acceptable by media, business and the intellectual elite who own the economy of this country.

It is also a saddens me that this lack of articulation mixed with greed for power can be explosive and begin to alienate those that look to him for change, those that need him for change.

Daywalker

Had a chillout session with some friends this weekend. And as is the case, over braai's, in offices and boardrooms and restaurants across the country, one can never escape the names Zuma and Malema in any social gathering or informal conversation that lasts more than an hour.

I don’t know about you but sometimes i feel emotionally drained by the highs and lows of our leadership, and lately there seems to be more lows than highs - something which i think happens in most nations but still draining if you love your country.

However, if you ever feel despondent about the way things are going all you need is a dosage of Trevor Noah's Daywalker! The guys will make you laugh, and not just at our politicians but also at ourselves as South Africans. So when i got home after the discussions this weekend i popped in...The Daywalker.

If at times you forget, Daywalker will remind you why you love this country. It is Brilliant and everyone should own a copy!

Props to Trevor. I love comedy and as far as I'm concerned he is up there with the Kings of comedy such as the late Bernie Mac, Cedric The Entertainer and the rest of the gang.

Do yourself a favor and get it.

Took a trip to Thailand over the easter weekend, what a dope experience! Everything in thailand is Tourist orientated so shopping is great wether your looking for technology, clothing even furniture - its worth the return ticket. Entertainment is vast, there are the party districts with endless bars, interesting shows (ping pong - i'll say no more), floating markets and so much more.

I could go on and on about our trip but i think pictures tell a better story. Check it out.

Welcome to Pattaya! 2hours from Bangkok, not the greatest beach by any stretch of the imagination but what a chilled out place to have a good time. I really enjoyed Pattaya.

Almost every single street in this town looks like this. Bars, restaurants, shops and places of "entertainment", plenty places of entertainment.

Never in my life have i seen so much sex for sale and done so blatantly at that. Its crazy. Mothers and daugters work side by side selling sex. At first its a laugh then you walk in to a bar and women start howling at you. I now understand women mean when they say they have been made to feel like a piece of meat.

Mpegs asked me to take photo's of interesting buildings, we did not really have enough time to look for the gems.

Flight back home - was feeling a lil under the weather here. on the day we left i woke up with a stomach bug - couldn't sleep or eat much for the 14hour trip. At least i only caught it on the last day.

As a graphic designer I'm really passionate about design that moves people, concepts that makes you think and have the ability to changes ones perspective. All too often designers concern themselves with creating the cool and trendy, most of us only use our talents for income.

I have to thank my lovely, Kathleen, for sharing this find with me. The artists pseudo name is Banksy He/she/they is believed to be a native of Yate, South Gloucestershire, but the true identity is unknown. His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics. The guy does not sell photos of street graffiti but Art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder.

I wont lie, as a black man in South Africa cops don't make me feel safe, they make me nervous. I dont know how many times i or my friends have been pulled over and harassed and even arrested for BS. And the more affluent you are perceived to be, the worse it gets.

Check out the link bellow. Its crazy how those we entrust to protect our rights are so often the people used to take them away. At a September 2007 forum with Senator John Kerry at the University of Florida, student Andrew Meyer was arrested and Tasered after loudly questioning Kerry about his ties to President George W. Bush. The video shows Meyer screaming, "What did I do?"

Shit i find worth sharing.

Im one of those people that always seems to say that wrong thing at precisely the wrong time and thats because i cant keep secrets and i cant keep secrets because i don't have many myself. Its hectic, its so bad, or good, depending on your point of view, that i cant contain myself when i discover something cool or interesting, i get into state of panic if there is no around to share it with.

I have a file of images, designs, web sites, video's, articles and a whole bunch of other good shit that i have collected over time and It all just sits there, in all its coolness, doing nothing, inspiring no one.

Shit i find worth sharing is exactly what the name says it is. Something which i may think is just cool, may be the missing link to some else's big idea and thats why i want to share. By sharing my finds with you i also hope you'll share yours with me.

This blog is not that complicated so i'll leave it at that.
